Just before noon on Thursday, South Philadelphia felt a large blast from the 1400 block of South 8th Street. By 2:45, fire officials had the blaze under control, but the damage was done.

As of this posting, crews in the area said that there was a large amount of uncertainty regarding the number of people injured, who was missing, and if there were any fatalities. Adam Theil, the fire commissioner, reported that they did find one person who they believed to be deceased, but the debris was too much to get them out initially.

It is currently unknown what started the fire, but there were reports of a gas smell in the area.

At least two homes collapsed due to the explosion.

The Villari Firm sends our deepest condolences to those affected. We’ll provide updates as more becomes known.
