Helpful Services for Babies with Birth Injuries

Children who suffered from a birth injury often require more specialized medical attention and care. Some families may feel overwhelmed by the financial costs associated with the treatment their child needs. However, there are several governmental services for children who have suffered from birth injuries. We discuss some of the services that may benefit families below.

Medical Treatment

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are federal programs that offer insurance to children whose families meet income guidelines. Under these programs, children may attend regular medical appointments without their families having to pay out-of-pocket costs.

Social Security Benefits

Children with disabilities can apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. This program provides monthly payments to help parents and children have better access to care. Typically, SSI pays for treatment for the following disabilities:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Total blindness and/or deafness
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Serious intellectual disorders

Educational Services

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires all states to provide special education services to children with disabilities. In order to qualify for the program, a child must have at least one of the following:

  • An intellectual disability
  • Visual impairment
  • Severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances
  • Hearing impairment
  • Speech and/or language impairments
  • Traumatic brain injury
